 Youngsters go to jail

Community Info

Mike O’Shea from the Pelican’s Nest by the Bay on the Wynnum foreshore was forced to pay bail at Masters Jailhouse today 26 April to release staff members. Staff members had been accused of crimes ranging from smiling too much to trying to drive a car.

No real criminals were detained. The event hosted by Masters Tingalpa was a fund raiser for the Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC).. Time4Kids is a PCYC great fun opportunity for corporate organisations and members of the community to get involved and work jointly with state Police in supporting their local PCYC to make a difference. Each year during the month of April Time4Kids events are held across Australia. Hundreds of participants from all walks of life - community members and leaders, business owners and celebrities come together to support PCYC and Do Time to Stop Youth Crime. Volunteer detainees are locked-up in mock jail cells, under the supervision of a Police Officer and must raise bail through donations to be set free.

Proceeds from the fundraising goes towards youth development and crime prevention programs at one of over 130 PCYCs throughout Australia.

 21 March is Harmony Day

Community InfoThe message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. There are many ways we can celebrate Harmony Day – through sport, dance, art, film, music, storytelling, cooking and sharing cultural meals. By participating in Harmony Day activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place. Harmony Day is an Australian Government programme and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Since 1999 Harmony Day has been widely celebrated across schools, childcare centres, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies. To encourage celebrations, free Harmony Day promotional material is available to those who register events on the website. There are also educational resources for teachers and students to celebrate Harmony Day in their schools.
