21 March is Harmony Day
The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world.
There are many ways we can celebrate Harmony Day – through sport, dance, art, film, music, storytelling, cooking and sharing cultural meals. By participating in Harmony Day activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place.
Harmony Day is an Australian Government programme and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Since 1999 Harmony Day has been widely celebrated across schools, childcare centres, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies.
To encourage celebrations, free Harmony Day promotional material is available to those who register events on the website. There are also educational resources for teachers and students to celebrate Harmony Day in their schools.
Our Wynnum Relay For Life event is happening at the Wynnum Vikings AFL Club at 300 Kianawah Road over the 12th and 13th of October. It is the first time that the event is happening in Wynnum.
The Relay for Life involves teams camping overnight in tents , taking turns to keep a baton moving around a track between 3pm Saturday through to 9am Sunday with food, entertainment and ceremonies running throughout the day and night. It is a coming together of the community to celebrate local cancer survivors and carers, to honor and remember loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer and an opportunity to fight back against a disease that takes too much. The event raises money for Cancer Council Queensland’s Lifesaving research and support programs.
It is an empowering event and no fitness level required it is fun for everyone. Organisers are hoping to invite any survivors and carers from the area who might be interested in joining us for the opening lap and special afternoon that we are putting on from 3-4pm Saturday the 12th. People can find out more information and register by calling 1300 65 65 85 or visit the website at www.relayforlife.org.au
The event kicks off at 3pm on Saturday the 12th and finished up at 9am on Sunday the 13th. Why not register a team or just go down and support this worthwhile event.

Enrol to Vote Online
The right to vote is one of the privileges of living in a democracy, you get a say in who runs your country.
In Australia, enrolling and voting is compulsory by law. More importantly, it is your chance to choose who represents you in the federal parliament.
When you enrol to vote, your name and address is added to the Commonwealth Electoral Roll, the list of voters entitled to vote in an election. You must enrol and vote if you're an Australian citizen aged 18 or older.
You can enrol if you're 17. That way, you'll be on the electoral roll and able to vote when you turn 18.
