Wynnum Chamber: Chamber events get tick of approval

Wynnum ChamberMembers of the Executive are beaming … and why not!

Recent Wynnum & Districts Chamber of Commerce events are getting the big tick of approval. Feedback from our April 9th Business Breakfast suggests we have struck the right balance with the format, and of course, the quality of guest speakers. Diana Crosby did a great job with her presentation on how to get the most from networking opportunities.

This breakfast event saw the introduction of increased involvement of the audience, resulting in most attendees staying on after the formalities to build relationships with other members. It was great to see, and great to be involved. Those members who attended were also happy with the reduced attendance fee of $20.00 for members.

There are plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ arrangements that go to building a successful Chamber and we are committed to recognising those who make significant contributions to our operation. In line with this, Inkjet & Laser Solutions Director, Denis McKay was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his donation of a high-volume colour copier to assist the Chamber with its printing needs.

Wynnum Chamber: A Thriving Future for Wynnum

Community InfoLord Mayor Campbell NewmanThe Lord Mayor Campbell Newman showed he was up for the challenge of tackling the future development of the Wynnum Central Business District (CBD) last Tuesday 6th March during a Wynnum and Districts Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting.
A crowd of almost 300 local business and organization representatives and community members turned up to hear of the Lord Mayor’s plans to tackle increasing population density and prospects for the development of the Wynnum CBD.
Cr Newman assured he was ready to listen when he announced that a draft statutory plan will be released by June that will allow for community input.
“We want to make sure Wynnum Manly is still a wonderful place to live in in 20 to 30 years” stated Cr Newman, “This can only happen through working together to create a proper regional plan for the future and by developing the infrastructure to support that plan.”

Since being identified as a Major Activity Centre in the SEQ Regional Plan in May 2005, the government and Wynnum’s CBD Urban Renewal Coalition, have been developing strategies to realise Wynnum’s great potential and deal with a rapid growth in population.
Attempts have been made to engage the local area through neighbourhood planning workshops held throughout Bayside which sought feedback from the community.

Everything from road works, public transport, traffic congestion and the network of tunnels being build in the Brisbane area, to a lack of local entertainment and the proposed Wynnum Civic centre/library was discussed during the brief question and answer session that followed the breakfast.

“Infrastructure in the past 10 to 20 years has been terribly neglected” said Cr Newman, “because of a successive failure to put money into critical road sections we’re seeing a huge amount of pressure on our roads.” Road works on Wynnum Road and the Gateway Motorway at Tingalpa alongside various other projects are steps to decrease traffic congestion. Brisbane can also expect to see 210 brand new, environmentally friendly buses on the roads towards the end of 2007.

The Wynnum Library, recently identified as the sixth busiest in the Brisbane City area, has also been marked for redevelopment. Possible funding avenues are currently being addressed with a potential public/private partnership high on the list. The prospect of other complementary services sharing the vicinity is also being investigated with the statutory plan expected to address these issues.
Hopes that a new civic centre would address a lack of entertainment for young people were expressed but Cr Newman was careful to stress that there’s a fine line to be walked.
“If we rush this process we will have all kinds of accusations,” he said, “we have to tread carefully.”

Cr Newman remained positive however about the future of Wynnum Manly.
“Together we have to redesign Wynnum Manly, create a new vision and take the community with us.”

Wynnum Chamber: Chamber of Commerce- Monthly Meeting

Wynnum ChamberLaurie Maloney and Jim HermansThe many business members of the Wynnum Chamber of Commerce, met Monday night, the 14th November to learn more about the new IR legislation threatening to pass. Laurie Maloney, from Livingstone's Australia - Industrial Relations & Human Resource Consultants was the man chosen to give the address on what so far has been a very confusing topic. His speech was an eye-opener to the new awards and reforms that are soon to be reassessed by the senate. This legislation is expected to come into place by 1st January 2006.

In addition to Laurie Maloney's informative talk, the new committee members of 2006 were introduced. MC Peter Benjamin, the Chambers events co-ordinator, created a relaxed atmosphere for the evening. Enthusiasm was shown by the president Jim Hermans, for a membership drive which is focusing on promotion through newsletters, websites and more. MRA are also providing funding to clean up graffiti in the area. This move aims to make our region more attractive and appealing to prospective businesses and promotes better services.

New members also attended, aligning themselves with the chamber. Stacey Martin from, "1st Class Accounts," and Annetta from, "Promo Centres," both introduced themselves and their companies. It is clear the Wynnum Chamber is expanding both in size and support. With their fresh faces and ideas, we should see some exciting new developments.
