 | Past Politicians: Plasitc Bags |
Federal Parliament has rejected a proposal to introduce a 25 cent levy on plastic shopping bags, but may reconsider if retailers and shoppers don’t take greater responsibility for the way they use and dispose of shopping bags.
Federal Member for Bowman, Con Sciacca said, “Australians use about 6.9 million shopping bags a year. That’s about one bag per person per day.
“It is estimated that between 50 and 80 million bags enter the environment as litter every year.
“Particularly living so close to the Bay, locals need to be mindful that careless disposal of plastic bags and other plastic packaging can have dire effects.”

September is a popular time for families to go away - the kids are on holidays, and the weather is getting warmer. But nothing ruins a great holiday more than coming home to the unpleasant discovery that you’ve been burgled.
Federal Member for Bowman said, “An empty house is an attractive target for intruders. But there are some simple things families can do to give their house a “lived-in” look and reduce the risk of a break-in.
“That’s why I’ve prepared a free information kit Safe & Secure: at home and on holidays to help families make sure they keep themselves and their property safe during the holiday period.
“The kit includes useful hints on personal safety, protecting your children, protecting your car, having a safe holiday and safety in the water.”
The Safe & Secure Kit is available by phoning: 3245 5777.
